Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
