Cutting-edge AI Tool Can Predict Personal Susceptibility of More Than 1,000 Diseases, Say Experts
Researchers have engineered a novel AI system that can estimate a person's likelihood of experiencing over 1,000 diseases, and project medical developments up to a ten years in advance.
The generative AI model was tailor-made by researchers using algorithmic concepts similar to those applied in large language models.
It stands as one of the broadest examples to date of how generative AI can model human disease progression on a large scale, having been developed on records from two different healthcare systems.
"Health incidents often adhere to foreseeable trends," stated a researcher working on the initiative. "Our tool identifies those sequences and can forecast long-term wellbeing results."
The tool operates by assessing the chance of whether – and when – an person may develop ailments such as malignancies, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular conditions, respiratory disease and a wide range of disorders.
Named this advanced system, it assesses "clinical occurrences" in a person's record, such as when illnesses were diagnosed, along with personal habits including weight issues, smoking, drinking habits, as well as age and sex.
This tool also examines anonymised health information to forecast what may occur over the next decade and beyond.
It was developed and validated using confidential medical information from a significant cohort of participants in a pair of extensive medical databases.
Medical probabilities are expressed as likelihoods throughout durations, akin to predicting a percentage chance of rain on a specific date.
A senior project head suggested that patients might utilize the system within the near future.
"You enter the clinic and the physician is familiar with using these tools, and they are able to say: ‘Here’s several major risks that are in your future and these are a few things you could do to really change that.’"
The expert added, "Probably most individuals will be instructed to improve diet, and if you smoke you will be advised to cease – and that will be reflected in your records so that guidance is unlikely to shift drastically – but for certain conditions I think there will be personalized things. This is the vision we strive to achieve."
The advantage of the innovative system over current models – such as focused assessment tools – is that "we can assess all diseases simultaneously and over a long time period. That is the feature that focused calculators can’t do."
Researchers confirmed: "This system forecasts the rates of more than 1,000 diseases, depending on each person’s past disease history, with reliability on par with that of current single-disease models."
"The AI-driven design also enables projection of simulated medical pathways, providing valuable estimates of potential disease burden for up to 20 years."
A respected professor in medical artificial intelligence stated: "This represents the dawn of a innovative method to understand wellbeing and health trajectories."
"Predictive tools such as ours could in the future help tailor treatments and foresee patient services at a broad level."
