Gavin Newsom States He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, I would be lying if I denied it," Newsom remarked when asked about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's time in office as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

Newsom has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and championing a initiative that would increase the party's congressional seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has made him a target from critics.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend interview on Fox News. The secretary announced intentions to cut government money from California and warned suspending the authority to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy said, following a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that led to three deaths and four injuries.

Newsom's office pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the driver's employment multiple times, which enabled him to receive a trucking license under U.S. law.

Duffy had before stated he was holding back $40 million from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office responded in a recent statement responding to the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted poll revealed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters said that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has increased to an typical level of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an typical level of over 40% to under 40%.

Earlier this year, Newsom commented while on a trip several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
