Human Rights Organizations Alert Funding Hold Could Enable Modern Slavery

A coalition of 74 legal, religious, and advocacy groups across the nation has sounded warnings regarding the delaying of $88 million in public money allocated for individuals escaping forced labor.

Support Systems Under Threat

Per a collective communication, the Justice Department has halted financial support for more than 100 service providers that aid survivors escape their traffickers and access essential services like housing, counseling, and case management.

"Letting such resources to vanish would allow exploitation to flourish and endanger victims," the document warns. "Various communities will be without their only service provider, abandoning individuals with no safe emergency housing."

Call to Action

The alliance is asking legislators to push the executive branch to release the allocated money to support thousands of victims across the country.

This plea follows investigations that the administration has reduced efforts to address modern slavery, although spokespersons deny any retreat on victim support policies.

Consequences for Regions

  • Many assistance providers saw their funding end effective the last day of September.
  • In the absence of these funds, victims may lose access to crucial assistance including temporary accommodation, therapy, and legal aid.
  • Exploiters could operate with impunity, endangering public safety.

Official Statement

In response to concerns over the frozen funds, the department indicated that funds allocated by lawmakers would be distributed in due course, but added that former beneficiaries wouldn’t necessarily receive funding in the next cycle.

Upcoming allocations will be made aligned with the government's goals, the department explained.

Longstanding Backing

The document further notes that lawmakers has consistently supported to continue these services over the past 25 years, underscoring the essential role of properly financing essential services to protect survivors and stop further abuse.
