I believed I nicked it - Carey on review reprieve.

Australia gloveman Alex Carey stated he thought he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on DRS on day one of the 3rd Ashes Test versus the English.

After surviving on 72, Carey crafted a superb 106 to help the Australians finish on 326-8 at the end of play in Adelaide.

What happened?

Australia were 245-6 when Carey went for a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.

The England team appealed confidently, thinking they had heard an edge, but umpire Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

Following skipper Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the technology examined by third umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a significant spike although this came before the ball had reached the bat.

Gaffaney added he believed there was a clearance between bat and ball.

As a result, Carey was given not out.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," commented Carey.

"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. It made a convincing sound near the bat."

Technology Debate

Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' during the series after a number of unclear calls.

Bowling coach David Saker indicated England may escalate this most recent incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's where we are."

Personal Milestone

The ton was his first in the Ashes.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father passed away in September. His spouse was in tears in the crowd as the batter marked the occasion by pointing to the heavens.

"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," said Carey.

"You can probably understand my glance skyward. I'm fighting back the tears. It was a fantastic feeling."

History of Controversy

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the keeper who notoriously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes series, resulting in a heated final day.

On his reprieve he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."

"Maybe it went my way."
