‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?
Phototherapy is clearly enjoying a surge in popularity. There are now available light-emitting tools for everything from complexion problems and aging signs along with muscle pain and oral inflammation, the newest innovation is an oral care tool equipped with small red light diodes, described by its makers as “a breakthrough for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, boosting skin collagen, easing muscle tension, alleviating inflammatory responses and chronic health conditions and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.
Research and Reservations
“It feels almost magical,” observes a neuroscience expert, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Naturally, we know light influences biological functions. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, too, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones while we are awake, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Sunlight-imitating lamps frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to elevate spirits during colder months. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.
Different Light Modalities
Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. During advanced medical investigations, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, finding the right frequency is key. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, extending from long-wavelength radiation to high-energy gamma radiation. Therapeutic light application employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).
Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. It modulates intracellular immune mechanisms, “and dampens down inflammation,” says a dermatology expert. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “generally affect surface layers.”

UVB radiation effects, like erythema or pigmentation, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – meaning smaller wavelengths – which decreases danger. “Treatment is monitored by medical staff, so the dosage is monitored,” says Ho. And crucially, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – unlike in tanning salons, where regulations may be lax, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”

Red and blue LEDs, he says, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red light devices, some suggest, improve circulatory function, oxygen uptake and dermal rejuvenation, and promote collagen synthesis – an important goal for anti-aging. “Research exists,” says Ho. “But it’s not conclusive.” In any case, with numerous products on the market, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. Optimal treatment times are unknown, how close the lights should be to the skin, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Numerous concerns persist.”
Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions
Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – although, says Ho, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Certain patients incorporate it into their regimen, he says, though when purchasing home devices, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. Without proper medical classification, the regulation is a bit grey.”

Simultaneously, in innovative scientific domains, researchers have been testing neural cells, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he reports. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that it’s too good to be true. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.
The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, however two decades past, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he explains. “I was pretty sceptical. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, which most thought had no biological effect.”
The advantage it possessed, nevertheless, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

Upon examining current studies on light therapy for dementia, he reports, several hundred individuals participated in various investigations, including his own initial clinical trials in the US
