Jordan Henderson Opens Up About "Challenging Times" Following Saudi Switch
England player Jordan Henderson admits he has encountered "challenging moments" since departing from Liverpool for Saudi Arabia and admits he might "taken different decisions".
The veteran midfielder was widely criticized for departing Liverpool in 2023 to play for Al-Ettifaq in a nation where same-sex relationships are against the law.
Henderson had previously been a vocal advocate of LGBTQ+ rights and expressed regret for disappointing or upsetting people in the community when he exited Saudi Arabia to move to Ajax six months later.
International Selection and Thoughts
Henderson was left out of Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad but has come back to the Premier League with Brentford and the England squad under Thomas Tuchel.
"In my opinion it was the reason why I was excluded from the Euros," Henderson remarked. "When I was in Saudi I feel I was in each gathering before the Euros."
"Regarding timing, with everything in hindsight, yes - maybe I would have made different decisions."
"But at the time that's how I felt and the decision I made was for numerous reasons and only I know those reasons."
Personal Challenges
"Honestly speaking, over the past few years I have had several tough moments. It was similar to a separation when I left Liverpool."
"Naturally I'm not perfect and I've made poor choices in the past. Of course I will have over my career."
"But all I've ever sought to do is the right thing."
International Career
Henderson has earned 85 caps since making his England debut against France in 2010.
He is in Tuchel's squad to compete against Wales and Latvia this week and feels he still has a lot to contribute on the pitch.
"The most important people are the coach, the coaching staff and the players and what they think," said Henderson.
"Inquire with them what they believe, if I am a cheerleader when I am here. I doubt one of the top managers in Europe would be picking me just to do that."
