Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Inclusion in English Ashes Team
England have opted for a 12-man selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected group, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers is still the probable choice.
Spin Options Considered
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
However McCullum has opted to stick with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
