Taking action inspired by fictional guards, the Danish foreign affairs department has initiated a night watch team—far from guarding against mythical foes, but to track Donald Trump as Denmark is asleep.

The night watch starts at 5pm in Denmark daily and concludes with a summary compiled at 7 a.m., which is then circulated throughout the Danish government and relevant offices detailing statements made and developments taking place.

The role is believed to have been established in the wake of the diplomatic dispute between Copenhagen and the US over Greenland this spring, when the US president suggested acquiring control of the strategic island.

Analysts note that this initiative is among several instances of how Danish diplomacy and its civil service have had to adapt to the changed landscape of the Trump's current term.

A source familiar with the ministry stated, “It's accurate to say that the situation in Greenland and the time difference separating Copenhagen and the United States was quite an important reason introducing this arrangement during the spring.”

Instead of all staff needing to promptly reach for their devices to stay informed on updates from the United States, the foreign office said it had undertaken a coordinated approach to stay updated on Trump activities.

Jacob Kaarsbo, a ex- senior analyst at the Danish defence intelligence agency, stated that this development demonstrated, “as we have always known,” that the notion of the US as Denmark’s largest and most important ally was dead. “Alliances are built on common values and a common threat perception,” he said. “The president lacks both of those with us and it can be said he lacks it with the majority of Europe.”
