The First Lady’s Hat, Kate’s Plumed Pin and Additional Remarkable Outfits So Far

Hats! Jewels! Dresses! Crowns!

Diplomatic trips focus equally on what everyone is wearing as they are about what they’re saying and doing.

This represents a demonstration in fashion diplomacy – with an abundance of it as US President Donald Trump and the first lady tour the UK.

From Melania’s headwear and extending to Catherine’s ornamental pin, these are some of the standout looks to date.

Melania's Hat and a British Nod

What a HAT!

Melania often wears impressive headwear – her white and navy broad-brimmed design was a talking point at her husband's inauguration months ago.

It featured a clumsy incident when Trump tried to kiss her with the hat’s edge turning it into a tricky task.

Prompting the internet blowing up.

The first lady opted for a similarly dramatic flourish on day one of the official trip.

She arrived at Windsor Castle in a wide-brimmed purple hat that seemed to obscure her gaze, which she paired with a classic dark grey suit.

Melania's hat was deliberate, pointing to a position where she wants all eyes on her husband and his mission.

She noted that it matched the exact colour the president’s neckwear, in a nod to her support for her husband's agenda.

Dior is frequently chosen by the first lady, with the selection to wear it interpreted as a nod to US alignment for Europe.

Earlier, she arrived on British land in the most British fashion item: a Burberry trench coat.

She sported the honey-coloured, floor-length coat featuring an upturned collar, with glimpses of its signature lining appearing underneath.

Melania, her mid-fifties, finished the look with black sunglasses and footwear.

Wearing a British-made coat could be a case of engaging in fashion as diplomacy, which is something many first ladies have done.

For the Trumps' last state visit several years back, Melania – an ex-model – also dressed for UK labels, opting for names like the heritage brand, although she added a blend from the continent designers and US creators.

King and Queen Coordinate in Azure

The Queen, 78, was seen wearing a bright sapphire blue dress, a matching overcoat and hat.

She completed the look with a gem-set pin.

Princess of Wales's Attire Sends Political Signal

Kate, in her forties, chose a maroon outfit paired with a millinery piece.

From both the Queen and Catherine, it demonstrates support for British designers.

Catherine accentuated the outfit with a feather brooch.

Observers highlighted that like the Trumps, the princess also chose to match her attire to her husband, who wore a burgundy tie.

As with Melania, this acts to show support and that she's at one with her partner and home country's agenda.

The colors blue and red!

This seems a clear example of coordinated attire with meaning, to reflect the American colors.

It's an example the way the outfits can send a strong diplomatic message.
