The Household Personal Video Game of the Year List for 2025
So, what did you think of this year in your family? Could it be described as entirely positive as people post on social media? Overflowing with academic success for the children and riotous dress-up celebrations for the parents? Or perhaps it was a swamp of letdowns with only sporadic enjoyable moments? Is any of this authentic, or are we all digitally altered AI slop beings with perfect teeth?
I've corralled my thoughts for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to reflect on the crucial thing in a calendar year: which releases we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Game Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"It’s not my definitive list."
On her phone, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "searching for reasonable healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In the actual world."
Release Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He was offended that I even asked. I respect that.
Game Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into drama school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was playing Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where the Shark has a thriving utopia with far better healthcare than her eldest sister has in real life.
Game the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Game I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am behaving this way to toughen him up so he can grow up and play games for adults. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted deck building digital pastime, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you have a moment of clarity and see it is all just an attempt to trap you with fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a iconic franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the off. I wish I could deal with my demons so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Cerebral Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this stunning, original game and I just didn’t have the focused attention to give it what it required earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the late night after family time.
Game That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was the previous year's surprise hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is exceptional. It just gets each element right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the abilities behind the different joker cards are so creative it has become a game I literally would play at any hour. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an true high-water mark of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Game I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a minor pile-on when I wrote about how a glitch in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I recognized even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I share that in the exact way, because I appreciate the effort, and he is obviously an astute judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult Metroidvania-esque thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". What a joy. I understand that it looks ace and is ideal if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my mid-fifties. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but so was many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Toss-up between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names called from the back door at dinner time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or doomscrolling, but it burns like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
