The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and European Arrival

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, having been shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions

At Monaco, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the senior top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
