The retail giant Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

In a significant move, Walmart has started implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during a single visit. This policy officially takes effect starting November 5th, according to an internal announcement distributed to employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video received significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. Yet, the language has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Additionally, because the restriction is based on each visit, in theory a determined scalper could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to gather significant stocks throughout the day.

The Scalping Phenomenon

To most players, this approach might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. In recent years, speculators have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the game's rising popularity.

Some resellers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, whereas some search for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.

Looking Ahead

The new rule aligns with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for nearly $1,500, highlighting the ongoing demand and likely scalper target.

Hopefully, the retail limits will curb bulk purchases and improve availability for true fans and casual players alike.
