The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
