TikTok Provides The Community Control to Limit AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to lessen the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the platform announced that it currently hosts more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is being tested over the coming weeks before a full-scale rollout. This advancement comes amid a rise in content created by AI, fueled by recent content generation software.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that nearly 10% of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a popular video site exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A large amount of this content is classified as “AI slop”, a term for poor-quality, factory-style content that is frequently absurd or surreal.

Our research shows that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the power to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” commented a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

The service disclosed that there are currently over a billion videos on its service labeled as artificially created. Collectively, more than 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the app each day, making AI-generated material a minor part of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be able to reduce or increase the amount of AI content they see by accessing the content preference option in the application and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be modified under the filter include news, fashion, aesthetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its guidelines require content makers to label convincing AI-made content, and it bans harmful AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.

In addition, the app will now apply an “AI-made” watermark to content created with its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This action is aimed to deter users from trying to bypass the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is additionally establishing a $2m educational fund for professionals and institutions to create educational content about using AI responsibly. This program will benefit educational bodies specializing in training coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has supported its safety measures, amid controversy over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in Britain. The company is set to reduce hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in its British office, with trade unions and internet security professionals expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead clarified that human moderation would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by removing the most graphic content prior to it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content seen by content reviewers over the past year due to reliance on its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to integrate staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we additionally believe it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
