Toronto Blue Jays Secure World Series Meeting With the Dodgers

George Springer celebrating

Springer contributed to the Astros securing the World Series in 2017.

The Toronto Blue Jays earned a spot in their first World Series since 1993 by overcoming the Seattle Mariners in the seventh seventh game of the American League Championship Series.

Down by two runs, outfielder George Springer smashed a three-run homer in the seventh, leading the Toronto squad in the majors to a 4-3 victory in the best-of-seven series. Awaiting them are the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are the current crown, in the upcoming championship.

"It's incredible for everyone here, our city, Canada," said Springer, a star of the Houston Astros team that secured the 2017 World Series. "This is such an unbelievable moment."

George Springer has now slugged twenty-three playoff homers, placing him third in history after Ramirez (29) and Altuve (27).

"There's probably not anyone else anywhere that I want up in that situation except for George Springer with his post-season brilliance," said Blue Jays manager John Schneider.

The Mariners, who had led the early in the series, remain the sole team that has never reached in a championship series.

Manager Dan Wilson said "certainly that it hurts" after his club's elimination at Toronto's Rogers Centre, but commended their work throughout the year.

"This is a unique group. Sadly that we finished on the losing end of this game," he added.

The Blue Jays won the title on both previous visits in 1992 and 1993, and are set to host the Dodgers in the first game on the upcoming Friday.
